Paul Intson

Paul Intson

Paul Intson began his musical exploration as a jazz bassist composing for Indonesian Gamelan. His first series as a composer landed him with Disney in the mid-90s. From there he bounced around globally as a music editor and additional music composer on major features that offered the privilege of an enviable education. Since 2004, he has composed under his owname.

His style is more subtractive; he moves consciously away from each style he generates and attributes the process to his need to seek out a cultural home for himself. That process has earned him Genie, Gemini and Leo awards.

In his own words: “Before I write a single note, I immerse myself in research about the physical places and emotional moods that the music will capture. Only then do I write the score, respecting the rules and limitations of the musical genre, merging that style with contemporary form. Finally, I cast for musicians - the way a director casts for actors. The right musicians provide the performances that bring notes on the page to life.

I’m always seeking those eureka moments when the music lights up a scene; when images and sound combine to make something that neither alone could have achieved. That in itself is the ultimate reward.”

He resides and composes in Ancaster, Ontario ..... where he still plays bass.... and hockey.
